Retrospective
Agenda:
(Tronster) Budgets: need receipts
(Tronster) Highlight awards on web-page?
(Indie Suggestion) Retroactively add awards? (re: Phillip Johnson suggestion)
Press: Need to collect all mentions; use for future MIVS out reach
Postmortem Google data and general chat
Free-from Jazz discussion:
Kotey: Would be great to get slides of indie games and tournamnet information projecting on the air walls
Kotey: Need some type of beacon to draw people to tournment area
Kotey: Survey indies: make sure games have a fast/lighting version of the game; some rounds were so long people would walk out.
Kotey: Would like to have a 2nd PA, and a rolling projector so people could see what is going on
- Peter: Have a giant "tournment here" (15ft high) banner
Kotey: How to make us distinct; people think we are a general information booth
Sam: Should have MIVS Twitter Channel
Tronster: Want to make Awards Show personal priority
- Nate: Should do it back-to-back with Versus
Marc: May do more awards
- Paige: Need to tell indies more clearly how the awards are given.
- Nick: Helped out with judging; was unsure if judging played into awards.
Marc: Would like to have a MIVS "alumni area" (would need mapping, signage, custom judging rules)
- Nate: Would need to flush out ideas
Marc: Maria's idea of one dedicated alumni quickplay area
- Kat: For the first few days we only get alumni for quickplay; then everyone is fighting for it.
- Joel: We haven't gotten as many new submissions this year; due to opening when the server crashed
Lexi: People will wait for the last minute for submissions despite the
Nate: MIVS didn't have much outreach to people who didn't know about MAGFest; a more concerted effort much-much early (Spring?)
Nate: Feedback to the indies from judging
- Joel: Is spearheading; can use help handing out.
Nate: One indiedev showing at another indie's booth due to "publishing". How do we want to handle this in the future?
- Kat: Either you developed that game or not
- Lexi: If it's the same studio you can show other games you made
- Tronster: Needs to be published (as a new policy) on the web-site
Paige: Concerns about content?
- Lexi: Staff reserves the right to take down a "tag-along-game" that didn't go through the judging process.
Marc: Should bring to office about PG-13 environment (re: marketplace had adult-like items sold; does that apply to us?)
Kat: Identification rather than censorship
Sam: Artemus was empty a lot; hoping it has nothing to do with us
- Marc: Starships Horizon seems to be taking a lot of people, but it is another department not much control over it.
- Peter: Artemus was a bit loud just playing spotify music
- Kat: Might have been competing with DBA who had some music going
- Tronster: Did anyone ask Artemus to turn it down?
- Kat & Peter: Yes, they would for a bit
Marc: We should start staffing 24 hours, but need shifts that go all night
- Kat: Could talk to security about needing more roamer coverage
- Tronster: Would like to have pairs of people; external volunteers may take advantage
- Marc: We'd need to have trusted people do 1 night
- Peter: Jesse has been a valuable resources
Tronster: Want security to have a no bags policy midnight to 9am- Tronster: Add Cameras
- Maria: Add signage about being on camera
Marc: Small budget for items that are stolen
Paige: Dedicated sign-up space
Paige: Lighting worked much better this year
Paige: Is there space for us to advertise, outside of the MIVS space in the convention? e.g., Perhaps on main screens between concerts.
- Marc: If we create a MIVS cabinet, couldn't we host most of the tournaments on it.
Kotey: The tournaments in the evening; harder to get people to sign up. May have to limit # of indies can do tournaments.
Kotey: For some tournaments have leaderboards and winners is based on high score from that separate list
Marc: Should do some form of grand tournament across MIVS; keep it dept only
- Peter: "Champion of Indies", could be award (if not Friday awards)
- Paige: Don't require indies to make awards
Maria: Tournament space, don't want people to be left out
- Kotey: Casual tournament and a champions tournament
Paige: Suggestion from a DBA person, we should reach out to itch.io and have them show a variety of their games
Paige: Want to create similar scene as indie music scene, but something to help tour games
Marc: If we can get hotels to give a sooner confirmation
Nick: Something we can do with those crazy badges this year?
- Joel: There is slack channel
- Nick: There is also a Github page
Joel: If we can get "Pre-Flight" from Google forms into Uber
Joel: We had Starling (MAGFEst staffer) was able to book some Japanese musicians, wanted to book some Japanese Indies
- Marc: What process would they go through?
- Joel: Could be normal process or an "exchange space"
Joel: Baby Castles could bring more experimental pieces
Paige: Do want more experimental groups?
- Tronster: If the attendees want it; yes. Biggest (personal) concern is ways to effectively be open longer.
Marc: We need to do a better job in terms of where we put DBA (for tournaments), due to crowds in isles and around neighboring indies
Marc: Better layout in terms of how our dept connects with charity as Ablegamers had their setup obscured by some of our booths
