2023-6-20
Attendees: Lauren, BlueHat Dave, Sarah, Jared, Cralls came late
Agenda:
- Action item review
- Next steps/Stretch goals
- (Pushing Branding talk to next meeting when more members present)
Minutes:
Action Item Follow Up: Reach out to other departments about their submissions forms/process, and if they can include our 2 questions (content warnings, magscouts opt-in)
- Nate talk to Jam Clinic/Music:
- Sarah talk to herself in Guests:
- Panels uses their own form, so that’s covered. Guests dept will talk to guests about what they plan to do and if they think it’s applicable, will ask them if they want to be flagged as Scouts content. Will also be asking guests if they have anything that is particularly kid-engaging.
- Content Productions - planning to bring in puppets and run a puppet show
- Jared: This could be a good early morning Makerspace activity
- Dancing for Nerds
- Parkour for Kids - ran last year as well
- Yoga for Gamers - Ask if they could run a calm kids session?
- Music has the bug in their ear about Scouts. Talked about early morning soundcheck having acoustic sets and a show and tell type situation looking at different instruments, talking about what it’s like to be in a band, etc.
- Arcade is looking at kid-friendly hours. 6am-10am Saturday
- Cralls talk to Jarett about MAGFast:
- BlueHatDave & Cralls review Casey’s doc and polish it into a handout for other depts/panelists/people who need it:
- Lauren one-pager for Awesome Con:
- Posted a picture to slack.
- Feedback from parents thinking MAG would be like Awesome Con, so will need to clearly define what Scouts is and what it means to an audience looking for a kid-friendly con
- Discussion about what MAGScouts is and what the future of Scouts will be
- Cralls: There is the Otachan kids room at Otakon. I feel like we can provide more than that.
- Sarah: 5+ year plan would be to have a kids track. Not front and center on everything, but having a percentage like 5% made for kids would be fine
- Cralls seconding this. Not a separate festival for children, but encourage people to create things that are created for kids
- Sarah: Allowing the young and the young at heart to have a space that is welcoming to them. A space that they do not have to adapt to, but that is adapted to them. For example, would love to see 1up cabs in the arcade so they have their own kid-sized cabs instead of having to adapt to adult sized games. Consoles having a TV on the floor with bean bags so kids and parents can play together. They have a reprieve from having to adapt to an adult world. This is also an accessibility thing because there are plenty of adults who feel more comfortable in a reduced-age environment.
- Cralls: It increases accessibility for those who don’t feel as comfortable hanging out with neurotypical. Maybe having spaces where people can be more themselves.
- Lauren: I definitely have some concerns about this
- Dave: Yeah, we would definitely need to be careful how we’re marketing this
- Sarah: Maybe even times that are more friendly like having lights on.
- Jared: See if we can try to arrange this around Gaylord staff shifts
Stretch Goals - small discussion here, but be thinking about this for next time. What would you be excited to do and what could we actually accomplish by the end of summer?:
- Update or expand the activity sheet. Be super clear on ‘how do’
- MAGScout plush
- More art
- Cralls: Fan art competition!!! Social media tag? Jumbotron? Google form submission to the jumbotron (TechOps)
- Make your own junior keychain. This is inspired by Stock activity
- Jared: This is a good repurposing of materials already on-hand
- Jared: About half a dozen kids at Stock. Capt. Crab brought his kids. Couples with 3-4 year olds. Open MAGScouts to Stock
- Open Scouts to other events
- Interstitial for MAGtv
- Jason’s wife Becky (?) does voices and would probably be excited to participate in this
Action Items:
- Lauren: Poll of 11th, 18th, or 25th for next meeting
