The need for a large amount of compute hardware at the event has largely been superseded by provisioning things in the cloud, more stable internet (no more point-to-point links) and small servers getting significantly more powerful over the past few years.

The Bridges team is dedicated to providing a Linux based platform for the operation of various services like DNS, LDAP, NTP and the like, as well as maintaining that platform and keeping it up to date with modern systems.
A lot of this work happens before any event, but there is a fair bit of poking and maintenance during events as well.
