1. The Basics

Introduction:

Public Safety is the Boo-boos and Band-Aid Brigade of MAGFest. We provide minor first aid help to staff, volunteers, and attendees while on site at MAGFest. You may find us in the first aid rooms, or roaming the halls. We partner with Security and PG EMS to keep everyone at MAGFest safe.

Communication:

The Public Safety team mainly uses a private channel in the MAGFest Slack for administrative communications before and during the event. We also use handheld radios while patrolling the event spaces and responding to safety incidents. If you are a part of the public safety team and do not have access to the Slack channel, you’ll need to contact one of the department heads or managers listed below to be added.

2. Event Information

Pre-Event:

Orientation and Training

The Public Safety Department holds staff meetings virtually in November & December leading up to the event, for new and returning staff members. Meetings will be conducted virtually over Zoom or similar, and will be announced via the Public Safety (aka “First Aid”) slack channel. Staff are not required to hold any certifications, but it is strongly recommended that a basic First Aid/CPR certification be obtained prior to working the event.

At-Event:

Layout/Setup

Our room layout for Super MAGFest 2022 is expanded from previous years due to COVID considerations and now takes up both Camellia 1 and 2. Camellia 2 will serve as the “front desk” area for attendees to walk into, and is where the manager on duty will be. Camellia 1 will stay locked from the hallway, and is used as a quiet space for attendees to rest and recover if needed, or for the county EMS to treat sick attendees. The back “service” hallway will be used for access to Camellia 1.

Hours of Operation

Public Safety operates 24 hours a day for the entire duration of the event, and we are adding shifts for the load-in and load-out periods before and after the event starting with Super 2022.

Sign-in/Sign-out procedures

Volunteers arriving for their shift need to check in with the lead for the shift that’s just starting, and should try to check out with a shift lead or department head when they’re leaving, in case they have any important information to pass down to the next shift.

Attendees entering the safety office with medical issues or questions should also be signed in. The shift lead should keep a list of attendees who have been seen that includes their badge number, a general description of the problem, anything that we did to make it better, and the time.
